Currently, I shepherd and oversee various efforts at Heritage University designed to connect students to the University, their peers, and the surrounding community. My industry passion is education and I believe if used correctly, it can be a doorway to endless possibilities. Knowledge is power. Working with educational organizations and nonprofits organizations tops my list of previous occupations.
Early Beginnings
Graduating with an undergraduate degree in education, I began my career exploration as an early childhood teacher. I developed my understanding of educational best practices and honed a skill set to help people of all ages learn, including other educators as I stepped into the role of assistant director. It was here that I found a passion for developing improved communication efforts within organizations, driving organizational change efforts, and tapping into creative ways to bring awareness and attention to educational programs.
Exploring Education
Later, I went on to work in a public education K-12 school district, where I developed and produced major district communications and led various changes efforts across the district. This position afforded me much interaction with the public, especially in leading the successful Bond and Levy campaign in 2011. I went on to earn a Master of Arts in Organizational Management, specializing in Leadership.
Higher Education
Finally, I found myself working in Higher Education, accepting a position at Heritage University. In my current position, I serve in an advisory role to student organizations, providing guidance and working closely with student and administration. I supervise and advise staff and students who manage student events, meetings, activities, fitness center, intramural sports, and the student newsletter. One of the more rewarding responsibilities I have is working with students to resolve student concerns, communicating with appropriate departments and advocating for steps to resolution within student representation. I am approaching the end of my second Master’s of Arts Degree, this time specializing in Strategic Communication, and am expected to graduate in 2018.
What’s Next?
The changes being made by many colleges and universities are becoming less self-contained and having broader and deeper impact across entire institutions or systems. I hope to continue pursuing career opportunities within educational institutions, focusing my efforts on how to best work collaboratively to provide life-changing educational experiences.
When an orchestra performs, instrument groups are separate. However, each group understands its role and part needed to produce a cohesive result. The brass section doesn’t have to be tightly integrated with the woodwind section to produce a beautiful, harmonic performance, but each of those two sections has to understand enough about each other and the overall song to make the performance complete.
The same can be said for any institution of higher education. Every department should understand how they fit into the overall transformation in addition to how they influence or impact other departments from a macro perspective. As I develop my understanding of communication and pair it with my experiences in education, I recognize a distinct need in many educational organizations. Whether through full-time employment, consulting work, or collaborative efforts, I hope to develop lasting changes for educational institutions that can create bridges over departments that make institutions effective and powerful tools to bring opportunity to its participants.
